“ just the right moment “
One day awhile back as I leaned against a pole
with a cup in hand waiting for a bus,
an older woman of color sat down on the bench.
I smiled she smiled back and in
the ensuing silence she began to speak,
“ don’t let them make you believe “
“ that you will never meet again, never live again “
she went to say
“ that’s what they believe”
“ that’s what they want everyone to believe “
“ the truth is only the believers live again “
“ the ones that believe in love “
“ they’re the ones who never really die “
“ you see I know that look “
“ I know what it feels like to have that look “
“ the one you have written all over your face “
A bus pulled up, it wasn’t my number, she stood
and walked over to the door and turned
and with the most beautiful smile
I have ever seen she said
“ she will be waiting “
“ and when your eyes meet “
“ you will know “
“ once you find it “
“ once you feel it “
“ it never dies “
“ not as long as you both believe “
she pointed to her eyes smiled again said
“ believe “
As she stepped up and on to the bus,
it never fails to blow me away
those rare and brief encounters
we have and remember
and they way they always
come to mind at just the right moment
